Skelton, McKeon, Andrews, Conaway to Hold Press Conference on New Bill to Overhaul DOD Acquisition
Legislation will cut down on waste, fraud, and abuse, potentially saving billions of tax dollars and getting the right equipment to our warfighters sooner.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tomorrow, Wednesday, April 14th, at 12:00pm, House Armed Services Committee Chairman Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) and Ranking Member Howard P. “Buck” McKeon (R-Calif.) will be joined by Congressmen Rob Andrews (D-N.J.) and Mike Conaway (R-Texas), the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Committee’s Defense Acquisition Reform Panel, at a press conference to announce the introduction of bipartisan legislation to overhaul the acquisition system at the Department of Defense, potentially saving billions of taxpayer dollars and expediting the process to get necessary equipment to our men and women in combat.
The IMPROVE Acquisition Act would require DOD to begin to comprehensively manage the defense acquisition system and acquisition workforce to save taxpayer dollars and ensure that the right materiel gets to warfighters sooner. It would also reform DOD’s financial management through incentives and responsibly expand the defense industrial base to enhance competition and gain access to more innovative technology. These measures, which will potentially save billions of taxpayer dollars, are based on the recommendations of the final report of the Defense Acquisition Reform Panel, which was established in March 2009 to perform a comprehensive review of the DOD acquisition system. As a result of the Panel’s efforts, the legislation reforms the remaining 80 percent of the defense acquisition system not addressed by last year’s Weapon Systems Acquisition Reform Act.
