Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov reported to Commander in Chief Dmitry Medvedev that the withdrawal from Georgian territory of Russian troops sent to bolster the peacekeeping contingent during the peace enforcement operation in Georgia has been completed

Mr Serdyukov said the withdrawal of Russia’s military units took place without incident and has been completed according to plan. Russia’s military columns have proceeded to South Ossetian territory and some of the military units have already returned to their permanent bases on Russian Federation territory. The peacekeepers in the security zone have begun carrying out their set missions.

Russia has thus fulfilled the obligations set out in the conflict resolution agreement signed by the Russian and French Presidents in Moscow on August 12, 2008.
