HASC DEMOCRATS ELECT NEW SUBCOMMITTEE CHAIR

Washington, DC – House Armed Services Committee Chairman Ike Skelton (D-MO) announced that Committee Democrats elected Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) to chair the Strategic Forces Subcommittee.

House Armed Services Committee Democrats met on Thursday to select a subcommittee chairman to fill the vacancy created when Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher (D-CA) resigned from the U.S. House of Representatives at the end of June. Congresswoman Tauscher had served as Chairman of the House Armed Services Strategic Forces Subcommittee since the beginning of the 110th Congress in January 2007.

“I am pleased to announce that the House Armed Services Committee Democrats have elected Congressman Jim Langevin to lead the Strategic Forces Subcommittee,” said Skelton. Congressman Langevin has been a member of the House Armed Services Committee for many years, and also brings invaluable experience as a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. I am confident he will be an excellent chairman and make us proud as we work to protect Americans and preserve our national security,” said Skelton.

“It is an honor to be chosen by my colleagues to continue the great work of my colleague Ellen Tauscher,” said Langevin. “I look forward to addressing the critical national security issues facing the subcommittee, from nuclear non-proliferation efforts to our space and missile defense programs.”

Skelton added, “I want to thank Congresswoman Tauscher for her service on the House Armed Services Committee and in the U.S. Congress. She has been a leader on national security and non-proliferation issues. As Chairman of the Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, Congresswoman Tauscher has distinguished herself by her constructive and bipartisan approach. I regret that our Committee will lose such a talented and tireless member and subcommittee chairman, but I wish her all the best in her new role at the State Department as the Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security.”

Subcommittee chairmen were selected by the Caucus of the Committee pursuant to the Rules of the House Armed Services Committee and the Democratic Caucus. The full slate of subcommittee chairmen for the Committee will be submitted to the House Democratic Leadership for their consideration, and the new subcommittee chairman will assume his post immediately, pending no vote of disapproval by the House Democratic Caucus. The House Armed Services Committee Democratic Caucus also adopted a unanimous consent request to reaffirm the subcommittee selections of the entire Committee Democratic Caucus from earlier this year.
