CLEARFIELD, UTAH -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has received the Software Engineering Institute's (SEI) Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI(R)) Level 5 rating for Acquisition at the company's Missile Systems business unit. This is the first organization to be appraised the highest level of recognition for CMMI's model focused on acquisition excellence, according to SEI.
The CMMI for Acquisition is a best practices model for successful procurement of products and services to meet organizational objectives. Key aspects of the acquisition model include project management, process management, conducting and managing acquisition, and supporting functions.
"This CMMI Maturity Level 5 appraisal for acquisition highlights Missile Systems' ability to successfully acquire, integrate and deliver products and services from across the missile business industrial base," said John L. Clay, vice president of Missile Systems for Northrop Grumman's Aerospace Systems sector. "The ability to apply missile system domain expertise with proven development, production and sustainment capabilities allows Northrop Grumman Missile Systems to deliver effective and cost-efficient solutions to our customers."
The audit appraised Missile Systems and the ICBM Prime Integration Contract (IPIC) program.
"Achieving this recognition provides confidence to our customer that the necessary rigor and discipline is applied throughout the acquisition chain for critical components employed in a nuclear weapon system," said Jim Meyers, vice president and IPIC program manager.
"With this achievement, the Missile Systems business unit, and IPIC specifically, establish themselves as the standard bearers for balancing cost and schedule constraints while maintaining weapon system reliability and availability. Other acquisition organizations will be studying and emulating Missile Systems and their associated product teams years from now," said Brian P. Gallagher, SEI Certified High Maturity Lead Appraiser and engineering director for the company's Information Systems Intelligence Systems Division.
The CMMI(R) standard was developed by a coalition of industry, government and SEI to objectively assess the full range of an organization's software and systems engineering, program management and organizational management capabilities. There are five levels of CMMI(R) maturity, each a layer in the foundation for ongoing process improvement, designated by the numbers one through five with five being the highest. High maturity levels signify lower risks to successful program execution.
Capability Maturity Model and CMMI are registered in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office by Carnegie Mellon University.
