MARLBOROUGH, Mass., - Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) has been awarded a $12.7 million contract to provide Allegheny Power a seamless land mobile radio system that will help improve radio frequency coverage and communications reliability.

Raytheon's P25net digital land mobile radio system solution will also improve standardization and interoperability, which will allow lineworkers to share information and communicate more easily across the company's 30,000-square-mile service area.

"We have about 800 field workers serving 1.5 million customers across parts of Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Maryland. Raytheon's solution provides us with a system that allows for efficient communication during both normal operations and emergency situations," said David W. McDonald, vice president, Distribution for Allegheny Power. "Our crews – regardless of where they are based – will be able to use the system to communicate with each other while responding promptly to customer needs."

Raytheon will provide a 50-site digital trunked radio system, interconnected via an IP network infrastructure, to form an interoperable wide area P25 radio communications network. The system will bring Allegheny Power into compliance with the FCC 12.5 kHz narrowbanding mandate.

"Raytheon is fully committed to enabling the success of the Allegheny Power private land mobile radio system," said Brian McKeon, vice president, Raytheon Integrated Communications Systems. "The P25net LMR system will provide reliable mobile radio communications with excellent coverage throughout Allegheny Power's geographic area. This system will satisfy both current and future regional communications objectives."

Under the terms of the contract, Raytheon will be responsible for system design, frequency acquisition and licensing, equipment, project management, installation, testing, training, warranty and maintenance services.

Note to Editors:

P25net is fully compliant with the only currently recognized North American land mobile radio system standard, the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials P25 standard.
