President of Russia met with Defence Minister and Chief of Armed Forces General Staff

Moscow, August 12, 2008 - Dmitry Medvedev met with Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov and Chief of Armed Forces General Staff Nikolai Makarov

President of Russia reported that he has ordered an end to the operations to oblige Georgia to restore peace.

The security of the Russian peacekeeping brigade and civilian population has been restored and the armed forces of the aggressor are disorganized, the head of state said.

Dmitry Medvedev instructed the Defence Ministry and Armed Forces’ General Staff to make a decision with regards to the destruction of pockets of resistance when such instances should arise.

The President said that the Russian military involved in the operations will be awarded state awards.

PRESIDENT OF RUSSIA DMITRY MEDVEDEV: Based on your report I have ordered an end to the operations to oblige Georgia to restore peace. The purpose of the operations has been achieved. The security of our peacekeeping brigade and civilian population has been restored. The aggressor has been punished and suffered very heavy losses. Its armed forces are disorganized.

Nevertheless, when pockets of resistance and other aggressive actions occur you must take a decision concerning their destruction.

I would like to note the efficiency of our peacekeeping brigade and the harmonious work of all units. I would ask you, Anatoly Eduardovich, to submit your suggestions for which participants of the military operations should receive state awards and to convey my thanks to all participants.
