What: World Science Festival opening ceremonies will feature a life-size model of NASA's James Webb Space Telescope. With a 21-foot hexagonal mirror and five-layer sunshield as large as a tennis court, media will have a rare opportunity to see up-close a model of the nation's premier next-generation telescope and to learn about the discoveries it will make. On orbit, the Webb telescope will look back in time more than 13 billion years to help us understand the formation of galaxies, stars and planets.
This is a visual opportunity and B-roll will be available.
Speakers at the Opening Ceremonies include Lori Garver, deputy administrator for NASA; Dave DiCarlo, vice president of Northrop Grumman Space Systems; Brian Greene, Festival co-founder; and Warrie Price, president of Battery Park Conservancy.
Experts will be on hand to discuss the Webb telescope's deep-space mission, how it will observe distant galaxies and nearby stars and planets, and the progress made to date by building the observatory.
When: Tuesday, June 1, 11 a.m.-11:35 a.m.
Spokespersons will be available starting at 10 a.m.
Where: Battery Park, a 25-acre public park located at the Battery
A team led by Northrop Grumman, including Ball Aerospace, ITT and ATK, has invented new designs and manufacturing technologies for the first deployable space telescope. The Webb telescope will add to observations by earlier space telescopes, and re-write science textbooks with its new discoveries. The model's size shows the complexity of the mission and how the observatory will enable the Webb telescope's unique mission.
