General Dynamics Completes Air and Space Expeditionary Force IT Migration to Randolph Air Force Base

FAIRFAX, Va. - General Dynamics Information Technology, a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), recently completed a critical milestone in its support to the Air and Space Expeditionary Force (AEF) program by migrating the AEF network infrastructure from Langley Air Force Base in Virginia to Randolph Air Force Base in Texas.

AEF provides enhanced coordination and rapid-response capabilities across active duty, reserve, and National Guard resources. To streamline operations and align deployment tasking with the assignment process, the Chief of Staff of the Air Force directed AEF operations to align under the Air Force Personnel Center (AFPC) at Randolph Air Force Base.

“The move of AEF Operations to AFPC is enhancing the Air Force battle rhythm and ensuring the effective deployment of air and space power where it’s needed,” said Col. Christopher Sharpe, chief of the operations division, within the directorate of AEF Operations at AFPC. “The move, which is ninety percent complete, has been a virtually seamless transition for the Air Force and Combatant Commanders.”

General Dynamics developed a multi-phase plan for migrating AEF applications and systems to AFPC data systems. General Dynamics first redeployed AEF’s Unclassified but Sensitive Internet Protocol Router Network (NIPRNet) applications in May 2008. Then, General Dynamics migrated AEF’s Secret Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPRNet) applications in June 2008. Importantly, the integration to the AFPC infrastructure was transparent to users and did not interrupt operations. The migration also included installation of a new server suite to enhance application response times and provide added redundancy.

“General Dynamics has leveraged its expertise in highly secure networks to ensure Air and Space Expeditionary Force systems and databases were properly moved without interruption to the mission or its customers,” said Ken Hess, vice president and general manager of Air Force Systems for General Dynamics Information Technology. “Moving forward, General Dynamics is focused on continuing to provide highly responsive services to support critical AFPC Air and Space Expeditionary Force operations.”

Since September 2001, General Dynamics has worked closely with the Air Force under a $50 million task order to support Air Force major commands in planning and executing AEF operations.
