Lockheed Martin Announces Industry Team to Pursue U.S. Navy's Consolidated Afloat Networks and Enterprise Services Program

SAN DIEGO, CA, May 04, 2009 -- Lockheed Martin [NYSE:LMT] has announced that General Dynamics, ViaSat Inc., Harris Corporation and American Systems will be a part of its industry team pursuing the competitive contract for the U.S. Navy's Consolidated Afloat Networks and Enterprise Services (CANES) program.

The CANES program will consolidate and reduce the Navy's afloat information systems networks, reduce the infrastructure size and associated costs, and increase reliability and other capabilities to meet current and projected warfighter requirements. In late 2009, the Program Executive Office for Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence will award an initial system design and development contact to two companies for the common computing environment portion of the contract. A down-select to a single prime contractor responsible for system production is anticipated in 2011.

"Lockheed Martin has been a key provider of computing infrastructure to the U.S. Navy for more than 50 years," said Karen Conti, vice president for Lockheed Martin's CANES capture effort. "We have over 7,000 computing platforms across the fleet and have extensive experience in managing the evolution of technology on shipboard assets. We believe Lockheed Martin's own experience, the combined knowledge of our assembled industry teammates, and the innovation of a number of small technology businesses will bring a low-risk solution to the Navy."

For the CANES program, the Lockheed Martin-led team plans to use a wide range of content from small business innovators to provide niche services and products to the Navy. The team will use Lockheed Martin's Technology Collaboration Center - West, located in Old Town San Diego, for integration and testing of the CANES systems. The center was specifically created to foster and encourage small business technology development, collaboration and interface with actual Navy systems, in a secure, unstructured test environment.

"As a long-standing partner with the Navy, General Dynamics is committed to bringing advanced tactical networking, cross-domain security, systems management and expertise in shipboard information technology installation to CANES," said Bill Rau, an Emerging Business director with General Dynamics. "General Dynamics will help the Navy achieve efficient bandwidth use, security across all computing domains and improved quality of service to successfully fulfill their missions."

ViaSat Inc. brings expertise in information assurance to the Lockheed Martin CANES team. "Our depth of experience in communications, networking, and security allows us to bring a strong total systems approach to our role as information assurance lead, ensuring CANES success," said Jerry Goodwin, vice president, ViaSat Government Systems. "We are pleased to be a member of the Lockheed Martin team."

Harris Corporation, an international leader in the development and integration of assured communications technology and information infrastructures, brings their wireless communications experience to the CANES program through design and development of a highly reliable, low cost communications system.

"We are pleased to team with Lockheed Martin to provide expertise in certification and accreditation and information security in support of the CANES program," said Peter Smith, executive vice president of American Systems. "We have a 30-year proven track record with the U.S. Navy, and we're proud to be part of this team."

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 146,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The corporation reported 2008 sales of $42.7 billion.
